The Marlin Motel
Sounds like the Marlin motel in Whitianga we used to stay at Christmas time many years ago
As a family I remember one year there was a huge storm and the sea got up all rough and brown
My brother and I thought we were in heaven with our polystyrene surf boards
Riding the waves like we were in an Hawaiian surf competition
Coming in and stamping our dripping togs and shivering bodies all over the purple shag pile carpet
Settling down to eat peanuts and drink too much fizzy and watch Richard Hadlee and Ewen Chatfield in their prime
Then on the eve of new year I sneaked out into the sand hills and pretended I was holding the hand of the really nice girl in the unit next to us who was probably three times my age and peer through the pine trees over the dunes into the dark water and the occasional moon
Then walk in my bared feet hardened for the summer on the slightly wet but warm and steaming smooth grey asphalt
Look out to the dark water and dream of dolphins
